Karl started his career with an apprenticeship as a light vehicle technician (otherwise known as a mechanic or grease monkey). His first job as an apprentice was working at a Ford franchise in Porirua, North of Wellington. During his time in the trade, Karl has done everything from sweeping the floor to managing the workshop. He also worked in the United Kingdom for five years, seeing what the world had to offer.

Karl then moved into vocational education and worked for MITO as an Assessor, then looking after the assessor network around Aotearoa.

With his current role at Hanga-Aro-Rau, Karl really enjoys getting out and talking to industry and seeing the mahi that is done on a day-to-day basis.
