Project Fetu was a partnership between the Oamaru Pacific Island Trust and Hanga-Aro-Rau that supported Pacific workers in the Waitaki District through community-based, industry-supported learning. The pilot delivered an NZQA micro-credential with mentoring and wraparound support in trusted Pacific spaces. Fetu, meaning “star” in Gagana Samoa, reflected the Pacific tradition of navigating by the night sky. The project drew on this legacy by helping Pacific learners build confidence, gain skills, and strengthen pathways between community, industry, and education.
Project Fetu’s 2025 evaluation highlights the impact of a community-led, culturally grounded pilot that supports Pacific learners employed in the manufacturing industry in the Waitaki District in gaining digital skills and confidence. The findings outline what worked, what can improve, and how this model can inform future Pacific workforce development across Aotearoa. The evaluation and report were completed independently by Lisa Meto Fox and ‘Anau Mesui-Henry.
