As Hanga-Aro-Rau nears the end of its operations on 31 December 2025, it is timely and vital that we share our Mātauranga Māori Guidelines with our Māori partners, industry whānau, and the wider vocational education stakeholders.
These guidelines were co-created over three years (2022–2025) by kaimahi Māori / Māori subject matter experts across all Workforce Development Councils, guided by the collective wisdom of Te Kāhui Mātauranga Māori. They represent a living kaupapa, a taonga tuku iho designed to support the embedding of mātauranga Māori across engagement, research, data, quality assurance, and qualification development.
Sharing this mahi now ensures that the legacy of our shared efforts – the weaving of mātauranga, tikanga, and te reo Māori into vocational practice will continue to guide the new Industry Skills Bodies (ISBs) and all those who work to uplift Māori learners and communities.
We acknowledge that this work was never intended to sit within one organisation alone. It was crafted by Māori, for Māori, and with Māori, so that as Hanga-Aro-Rau concludes its chapter, the mātauranga within continues to move, breathe, and grow with our people.
We offer these guidelines as a koha to our stakeholders, iwi, hapū, and Māori enterprises, to support the continued integration and protection of mātauranga Māori within the vocational education ecosystem.
