Hanga-Aro-Rau to dive deep into the workforce development needs of the logistics industry

We are delighted to be undertaking in-depth research into the logistics sectors to further understand the current and future workforce development needs of the industry.

This follows the successful completion in October 2022 of similar research for the manufacturing and engineering sectors, which found a critical skills shortage in those sectors is set to grow by 38 per cent to 40,000 workers by 2028 if immediate action is not taken.

Our CE, Phil Alexander-Crawford, said it’s clear the logistics industry has been hammered by supply chain disruption and rising fuel costs since the pandemic began.

“But what isn’t so clear, and what the research will look at, is the people factor. That is, how vocational education and training of kaimahi can help maintain current workforce numbers for logistics and how the retraining and upskilling of staff can future-proof workforces in a rapidly changing post-COVID environment – especially as access to skilled migrants is limited,” he said.

We have again commissioned Deloitte to conduct this mahi, with results expected in mid-May 2023.

To learn more or join those in partnership with us in this mahi, please reach out to our Deputy CE, Samantha McNaughton.
