Industry Engagement

Hanga-Aro-Rau (Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics) Workforce Development Council worked with industries such as manufacturing, processing, extractives and drilling, transport, postal, and warehousing.

Build a more skilled workforce

Many industries experienced shortages of skilled candidates entering from vocational education. When industries struggled to hire people, they could contact Hanga-Aro-Rau to work together to ensure that NZQA provided the right qualifications or standards. This helped ensure that the system trained more people with the skills needed to meet industry demand.

Meet your rapid growth needs

Innovation and change were ongoing, and New Zealand industry needed to keep pace to remain competitive. Rolling out standardised training supported industries experiencing rapid growth or swift change. Hanga-Aro-Rau worked alongside industry to explore how qualifications could be developed to support access to a trained and ready workforce.

Build opportunities in the Māori economy

For those working in Māori business or Iwi development, New Zealand had a dynamic and expanding labour force of skilled Māori business owners and assets. Hanga-Aro-Rau partnered with Māori organisations to help realise opportunities and develop the skills, standards, and qualifications that supported business, community, and iwi aspirations.

Fix out of date standards

When industries were concerned that graduates and learners were not being taught the right skills, Hanga-Aro-Rau worked with employers and stakeholders to ensure vocational education standards evolved to keep up with industry needs.

Get professional recognition

Industries that needed ways to recognise skills and experience, or sought to professionalise and build credentials, could work with Hanga-Aro-Rau, peak bodies, and associations to establish qualifications that enabled members to demonstrate their capability.

Tap into a diverse workforce

Industries seeking to expand their reach to attract a wider and more diverse group of learners, or those working with people needing opportunities to enter new industries, could work with Hanga-Aro-Rau to create pathways and strengthen voices across the mātauranga and vocational ecosystems.
