Hanga-Aro-Rau partnered with the Ministry of Social Development’s Connected Service to deliver the Inspiring the Future event in Christchurch, aimed at connecting rangatahi with various industry professions. This collaboration saw Hanga-Aro-Rau invite Māori industry representatives from Customs and Freight support services, Boat Building, Collision Repair and Paint Refinishing, Warehousing and Distribution, Abrasive Blasting, Commercial Freight Transport, and Design and Offsite Manufacturing to showcase career opportunities. For the first time, participating industry role models offered follow-up site tours to rangatahi and their providers, enabling firsthand sector experiences. Hanga-Aro-Rau, recognised for its strong industry relationships, aims to create conditions where young people access meaningful career pathways informed by industry insights. This approach fosters a deeper connection between rangatahi and industries, ensuring workforce development aligns with sector needs and aspirations.
Rangatahi were full of enthusiasm after the event, describing it as amazing and adding that they learned a lot. “All of the role models were very interesting with different roles but similar experiences. I enjoyed understanding the path towards getting their jobs,” said one rangatahi. Another added: “Today was excellent. We got to talk and share with people based on their career and some barriers for us through our career.”
It was a privilege for the Hanga-Aro-Rau Whanake Māori tīmā to collaborate with the Christchurch Connected team, adding extra activities to the Inspiring the Future model. Beyond the main event, our industries were encouraged to invite community groups and rangatahi to take part in hands-on experiences, offering a deeper look into career pathways.
Leading this extension of activities, Morgan Toki from the Whanake Māori tīmā helped ensure that young Cantabrians were not just inspired but also given tangible opportunities to connect with industries and see potential careers in action.
Air New Zealand Cargo Terminal Tour – An Inspiring Follow-Up
Following the Inspiring the Future event, Steve Tomlinson Owner and General Manager of Koru Customs & International Freight organised for young participants to have the chance to go behind the scenes at Air New Zealand’s Christchurch Cargo facility, hosted by Joshua Major, Cargo Operations Manager for Christchurch/Wellington.
Joshua shared his career journey and highlighted the many pathways available at Air NZ. With some team members serving over 40 years, it was clear that Air NZ offers more than just jobs—it provides lifelong careers.
The tour showcased the adoption of hybrid work models, sustainability initiatives, and the transition to an electric fleet. Experiencing the fast-paced operations firsthand left a lasting impression on attendees.
Together, we’re helping rangatahi take their first steps towards meaningful employment and training.
Ngā mihi to everyone involved in making this possible!
