Discovering Careers: A Hands-On Experience March 27th, 2025 Further to last week’s article on our partnership with The Cause Collective on their Get Ready Work Ready Programme, we’re going to take a closer look at the experience and impact of one of our site tours with the TR Group, an Australasian transport company specializing in heavy commercial vehicle rental, leasing, and maintenance. The Get Ready Work Ready Programme aims to empower rangatahi by providing career insights and skill-building opportunities, ultimately increasing Māori participation in high-skilled, well-paid jobs. Collaboration is key to driving change, making partnerships like this essential. The site visit which was organised with the help of our Hanga-Aro-Rau National Industry Advisory Group (NIAG) member David Jenkins and led by Paul Fairs of TR Driver Training, was a highlight of efforts to connect Māori and Pacific youth with careers in transport. TR Group’s passionate kaimahi (staff) shared their industry expertise, career pathways, and personal experiences to inspire the rangatahi in the programme. The visit began in the refurbishment and paint and panel shop, where Mike demonstrated the skill and precision required to restore trucks before they are re-leased or sold. The care and craftsmanship evident in the process set the tone for the rest of the tour. Next, Neil, GM of Driver Training and one of TR Group’s longest-serving employees, provided insights into the business’s operational side. He explained the logistics and administrative functions that keep TR Group running efficiently. The group then explored yard operations with Nate, who described it as “the backbone of TR Group.” Here, rangatahi observed the essential grooming and washing processes that prepare trucks for their next journey. A hands-on experience with a high-pressure washer added excitement to this segment. To wrap up, participants took part in a fun yet challenging competition to fasten, unfasten, and coil a strop as quickly as possible. What seemed simple turned into a test of skill and speed, showcasing the daily tasks of truck drivers. Before and after the visit, participants completed surveys to capture their evolving perceptions of the transport industry. Many noted a newfound interest in career paths they had not previously considered, while kaiako (their tutors) observed the impact of seeing the workplace firsthand. Several students even registered their interest in employment opportunities at TR Group, paving the way for real-world job placements. The visit left a lasting impression, with rangatahi highlighting the strong sense of community within TR Group and the organisation’s “people matter” ethos. Penina Schmidt of The Cause Collective expressed gratitude to TR Group for hosting the visit, stating, “It was more than just a glimpse into the industry; it was a gateway to a brighter future, providing our youth with hands-on experiences and the chance to envision themselves in a thriving, essential field.” We would like to acknowledge all of the employers who also took part in this programme: D & H Steel Rayglass Buckley Systems Neptune Pacific Direct Line
