Mahere Whanake Māori - Key focus areas

Industry Initiatives:

  • SpeedMeet:  A career event where students have brief introductions with employers and training providers. Several work-based learning providers also participate, helping connect Māori youth to employment and training opportunities. The event has facilitated over 1,000 employment matches for Māori rangatahi.
  • BECA and Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei have collaborated to provide essential exposure to industries and roles, offering Māori valuable experiences that broaden their career horizons and aspirations. This initiative aims to foster meaningful engagement between Māori communities and industry.

Regional Priorities:

  • Bay of Plenty (MBIE, 2023a, p.16): Over the next five years, strong employment growth is forecast in higher-skilled manager and professional roles nationwide and regionally. Rangatahi Māori can succeed in these areas with collective support to inspire their aspirations and provide access to education and training opportunities.
  • Canterbury (MBIE, 2023b, p.14): From an employee perspective, we have heard that there are issues around lack of understanding of career progression within the sector, and the different pathways workers can take to upskill.
